Tannis A. Waugh, Barrister and Solicitor - Biography

Tannis A. Waugh was called to the bar in 2003 and practices in the areas of real estate, commercial, estate planning and employment.

In the area of real estate, Tannis completes a significant volume of transactions and works closely with a group of real estate agents and other related professionals to provide professional and expeditious service to their clients. Feel free to email Tannis directly regarding services and fees.

The office is also familiar with the non-standard real estate transaction and does a significant amount of real estate work in the context of family and estate matters. If you have a matter that is complicated, please feel free to contact Tannis directly.

To assist first time homebuyers, Tannis has put together packages of information which take the mystery out of the process and explain step-by-step what will occur in the transaction. In a real estate transaction, it is essential that the costs are clearly laid out for clients and as a result, Tannis charges a flat rate fee for real estate transactions. More information about fees and the process can be obtained by emailing Tannis directly.

In the area of commercial law, Tannis assists her clients with incorporations, business agreements, commercial leasing and negotiations. Part of her commercial practice comprises of employment law.

Tannis has transitioned her practice from litigation to a solicitor’s practice. As such, she drafts and negotiates employment contracts and severance packages both for employees and employers. Her background practicing in employment litigation gives her the unique perspective of knowing how employment matters become strained and litigious. In representing her clients, she endeavours to structure agreements and negotiations in such a way to avoid litigation with careful attention to detail and a reasonable approach to negotiations.

Prior to establishing her own law practice, Tannis had an opportunity to independently work on ground breaking estate matters such as the first same-sex intestacy application for a married surviving spouse and a trust variation involving the definition of marriage. Currently, Tannis assists her clients with estate planning and administration.

After graduating from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Law with a Concentration of Criminology and Criminal Justice in 1999, Tannis continued on to the University of Ottawa where she received her L.L.B. and was honoured with the Stikeman Elliot/Carswell National Tax Award in 2002.

Prior to being called to the Bar, Tannis articled at Low, Murchison LLP in Ottawa, a full-service firm, working mainly in the area of litigation. Subsequently, Tannis practiced in Toronto where she worked in the areas of real estate, employment and estates for three years before starting Finlayson Waugh in June 2006 and carrying on as Tannis A. Waugh, Barrister and Solicitor in January 2008.

Tannis is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, Canadaian/Ontario Bar Association and the Toronto Lawyers Association. She is the real estate contributor to the Toronto Lawyers Association journal writing articles on topical issues in real estate law.

Tannis shares office space with family lawyer, Melanie Sager, who has been practising family law for over 13 years.  Should you have a family law matter, you can contact Melanie at msager@barrister-solicitor.ca or 416.966.5990.
